Sciatica Treatment

— Finding What's Actually Causing the Pain

The shooting pain down your leg, the numbness in your foot, the inability to sit or stand comfortably for more than a few minutes — sciatica is one of the most disruptive conditions we treat at Renew Spine & Wellness, and one of the most treatable when the right cause is identified.

Chiropractic for Sciatica — and When Spinal Decompression Is the Better Tool

Chiropractic adjustment restores lumbar alignment and reduces joint pressure on the sciatic nerve. For many sciatica patients, it's the primary and sufficient treatment.

For disc-related sciatica — where a herniated or bulging disc is compressing the nerve root — spinal decompression therapy is a more targeted option. Decompression creates negative intradiscal pressure that draws the disc away from the nerve, reducing compression directly rather than addressing it through alignment alone. It is non-surgical, non-invasive, and available at our Newark office.

Patients have driven to Columbus and paid significantly more for spinal decompression without knowing it was available here. If disc-caused sciatica is what you're dealing with, you don't need to go that far.

Surgery Is the Last Option. These Come First.

Chiropractic adjustment and spinal decompression are established, evidence-supported alternatives to surgical intervention for most disc-related sciatica. Many patients who have been told surgery is the next step haven't been offered these options first — or haven't been told they're available locally.

If surgery is where your current provider is pointing you, it is worth knowing what conservative, non-surgical care can accomplish before that decision is made. Dr. Cody will evaluate your specific case on the first visit and tell you honestly whether chiropractic and decompression are appropriate for what's causing your symptoms — or whether a different path is warranted.

What the First Visit Looks Like

Your first appointment at Renew begins with a thorough health history review and a focused evaluation of the lumbar spine and sciatic nerve pathway. X-rays are taken where indicated. Dr. Cody identifies the structural cause of your symptoms before any treatment begins — and same-day initial treatment follows.

Every care plan is specific to your case. The cause of your sciatica determines the tools used to treat it. We don't apply a standard protocol to a symptom that has multiple possible sources.

If You've Been Living With This for Weeks, That Frustration Is Earned

Most sciatica patients who call us have already tried rest, stretching, and over-the-counter pain relief. Some have been told they have sciatica without much explanation of why. Some are worried surgery is where this ends. All of them are tired of modifying their lives around a problem that hasn't gotten better.

That's the right moment to come in. Not to be told again that you have sciatica — but to find out specifically what's causing it and what the path forward looks like.

What Sciatica Actually Is — and What Causes It

Sciatica is not a diagnosis in itself. It's a symptom: irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. The treatment depends entirely on what's compressing or irritating the nerve.

The most common causes we evaluate and treat at Renew:

Herniated or bulging disc —

The most frequent driver of sciatica; a disc pressing on the sciatic nerve root in the lumbar spine produces the characteristic radiating pain

Lumbar misalignment —

Vertebrae out of proper position that create joint pressure and nerve irritation in the lower back

Piriformis syndrome —

The piriformis muscle in the buttock compresses the sciatic nerve, producing similar symptoms to disc-related sciatica but requiring a different treatment approach

Pregnancy-related sciatica —

Pelvic and lumbar changes during pregnancy frequently compress the sciatic nerve; chiropractic care designed for pregnancy addresses this specifically

Identifying which of these is present determines which treatment is appropriate. That's what the first visit establishes.

  • What services does Dr. John Jung offer?

Dr. Jung’s clinic offers chiropractic care, acupuncture, shockwave therapy, functional medicine, autoimmune-focused support, concussion treatment, chronic pain treatment, and performance-focused care including body hacking and brain chemistry support. Many people choose the clinic because these options can be coordinated together instead of handled in separate offices. If you’re unsure where to start, the first step is choosing the primary concern you want to improve. From there, the plan can be organized around what matters most first.

  • Do you provide acupuncture and chiropractic at the same clinic?

Yes—both chiropractic care and acupuncture are available in the same Barrington clinic. This makes it easier to build a coordinated plan without bouncing between providers. Some patients use both approaches during the same phase of care, while others begin with one and add the other as needed. The goal is to match therapies to your symptoms and response, not force a one-size approach.

  • Can you help if I’m not sure what treatment I need?

Yes—many patients start out uncertain, especially when symptoms are complex or have lasted a long time. A clear starting point is usually your main limiting problem (pain, flare cycles, brain fog, dizziness, fatigue, etc.). From there, care can be structured to test what helps and refine based on real changes you notice. You’ll leave with a plan that feels organized and doable, not a list of random options.

  • Do you treat concussions and post-concussion symptoms?

Yes—concussion treatment is one of the clinic’s focused services, including support for symptoms like headaches, dizziness, brain fog, sleep disruption, and sensitivity to light or noise. Many people seek care when rest alone hasn’t resolved the problem or when symptoms keep returning with activity. The approach is designed to support daily function and steady improvement, based on how your nervous system is responding. If you’re dealing with lingering symptoms, it’s worth exploring options that go beyond waiting it out.

  • Do you offer virtual or online consultations?

Yes—online consultations are available for patients who need guidance from home or who live outside the Barrington area. Virtual visits can be helpful for care planning, follow-ups, and functional medicine-focused support. If you’re local, you can combine in-person care with online check-ins for flexibility. The goal is to make it easier to stay consistent, even with a full schedule or travel limitations.

Sciatica Questions from Newark Patients

  • Can a chiropractor help with sciatica in Newark, Ohio?

Yes. Chiropractic care addresses the lumbar misalignment and disc-related pressure that most commonly cause sciatic nerve irritation. For disc-caused sciatica specifically, spinal decompression therapy is an additional option available at our Newark office.

  • Can chiropractic fix sciatica?

Chiropractic care resolves sciatica for many patients by correcting the structural cause of nerve compression. Results depend on what's driving the symptoms — herniated disc, misalignment, piriformis involvement, or pregnancy-related changes each respond to treatment differently. The first visit identifies which is present.

  • Is there sciatica pain relief without surgery in Newark?

Yes. Both chiropractic adjustment and spinal decompression are non-surgical options available locally. Spinal decompression is specifically designed for disc-related sciatica and creates direct relief of disc pressure on the nerve root. Many patients pursue these options after being told surgery was the recommended path.

  • What does shooting leg pain from my lower back mean?

Radiating pain from the lower back into the leg is the hallmark symptom of sciatic nerve compression. It typically means a disc, misaligned vertebra, or muscle in the lumbar region is putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. A full evaluation identifies which structure is involved.

  • Can sciatica be caused by pregnancy?

Yes. Pelvic and lumbar changes during pregnancy frequently compress the sciatic nerve. Dr. Cody is Webster Technique certified and offers prenatal chiropractic care specifically designed to address sciatica and other musculoskeletal discomfort during pregnancy.
